In the antenna night meeting we discussed hoe to "tune" your antenna's SWR before mounting it. Verticals: Mounting larger arrays near the ground (less than 1 1/2 times the length of the antenna) causes a false reading of the SWR, it reads higher. If the antenna is tested in the horizontal position it need only be greater than 1 wavelength above the ground on non-metallic supports, the area still must be clear of other objects. Yagi: Mount the yagi on a non-metallic support so that the driven element is greater than 1 wavelength above ground. With the antenna pointing up (vertical) you are pointing into clear sky, giving you a better match than horizontal mounting. Suggestion: A good use for our website would be to start an "Elmer" section. As we accumulate radio info, this could be posted there. In time this could become a great resource for the club and fellow Amateurs. WF6J
